How to Tame the Tongue

How can we tame the tongue?

“For we all stumble in many things. If anyone does not stumble in word, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle the whole body. Indeed, we put bits in horses’ mouths that they may obey us, and we turn their whole body. Look also at ships: although they are so large and are driven by fierce winds, they are turned by a very small rudder wherever the pilot desires. Even so, the tongue is a little member and boasts great things. See how great a forest a little fire kindles!” James 3:2-5

When Small Things Make a Big Difference

Have you ever noticed how the smallest things can change everything?

A bit in a horse’s mouth. A rudder on a massive ship. A single spark in a dry forest.

James knew what he was talking about when he wrote, “For we all stumble in many things. If anyone does not stumble in word, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle the whole body” (James 3:2).

He’s telling us something profound: an obedient tongue can affect the whole person. Not only that, but an obedient tongue will also positively influence the entire church body.

We all know them—those encouraging people. When they walk up to talk to us, we already know what’s coming. A smile crosses our face before they even speak because we know the effect their words bring into our lives. They’re living proof that words matter.

The Tongue Under New Management

James describes the tongue as a small rudder. Small, yes. But controlling something much larger. And here’s the key: it’s piloted by someone else.

The idea is simple but life-changing. The tongue is under the control of the Master Pilot, the Lord Jesus Christ.

When the storms of life toss us around—and they will—the disciplined believer is able to stay steady. Not only in control of their emotions, but able to take control of the environment around them. Everyone looks to a person in control in uncontrollable situations. It’s human nature.

The tongue as a rudder is guided by the Pilot because the believer has learned to trust the Captain of his life. Have you? Have you handed over the helm?

A Little Member That Makes Beautiful Music

James calls the tongue “a little member.” In Greek, it’s melos—the word from which we get our English word “melody.” Think about that. The underlying thought is of composing a song.

James gives us a wonderful picture: the tongue is a little member that must be in tune with God, with itself, and with others to produce harmony. If it’s not in tune, the melody turns to disharmony and discord.

You’ve heard it before. An orchestra warming up—everyone playing their own notes, their own scales. It’s chaos. But then the conductor raises his baton, and suddenly chaos becomes a symphony.

When a believer isn’t walking in fellowship with the Captain of our salvation, our tongues are out of tune with what God would have us say. It’s when we yield our rights and our lives to the Pilot of our ship that we can be in tune with God and other believers.

Your Part in the Symphony

Much like singing a song in a quartet, with just one of us off in our part, the whole group sounds off. I’ve been there. Haven’t you?

It’s when we sacrifice and submit to God’s authority—and to the good of the body as a whole—that we learn our part in the harmony of the body of Christ. We all have a part to play in harmony within our church family.

When we do that, our life song sounds better. The orchestration of the church comes together as a master symphony.

God isn’t asking you to be perfect. He’s asking you to submit. To let Him pilot your ship. Let Him tune your instrument. To let Him guide your tongue.

The question isn’t whether your tongue is powerful. James already answered that. The question is: Who’s piloting it?

Hand over the rudder. Let the Master Pilot guide. And watch what happens when a small tongue surrendered to a great God begins to make beautiful music.

Keep Looking Up!

Heaven is closer than you think.

May God bless your day.
