Where Do You Live?
“I am going away, and you will seek Me, and will die in your sin. Where I go you cannot come.” — John 8:21
Jesus doesn’t mince words here.
The Pharisees started this argument back in verse 13. But in verse 21, Jesus picks up the stone and throws it straight at their theological fortress: “You will die in your sin.”
Imagine their shock. These were the religious elite. The keepers of the Law. The models of righteousness. And Jesus tells them their ladder is leaning against the wrong wall.
“I am going away,” He says. “Where I go, you cannot come.”
Translation? I’m heading to Calvary. And your rule-keeping, your law-loving, your righteousness-by-checklist? None of it gets you there.
The Pharisees are stunned into silence. These men spoke religious lingo fluently. They knew Scripture backwards and forwards. But this? This stops them cold.
“Will He kill Himself?” they whisper in verse 22. “What does He mean?”
They’re so far off they think He’s threatening suicide. They can’t conceive He’s talking about heaven. About sacrifice. About love so reckless it would give everything for people who deserved nothing.
But that’s exactly what He means.
Mark 10:45 says it plainly: “The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”
He did “take” His life—but He gave it away.
For the world. For the Pharisees. Even for the ones plotting His death while He spoke.
Here’s the truth that sets Christianity apart from every other religion: God came to Earth to save the Earth. The Creator died for His creation. Heaven is His home, but we are His heart.
I was once a Navy man. I often think about sailors deployed for months at a time. Home isn’t the ship. It’s not the ocean. Home is where their loved ones are. Where their heart is.
That’s how Jesus feels about you.
His residence is heaven—eternal, glorious, perfect heaven. But His heart? His heart is with you. Right where you are. Right now.
And here’s the miracle:
If you’ve said yes to Jesus, He’s taken up residence in your heart. Heaven is now your heart’s true home. This world is just the place you’re passing through.
One of the enemy’s greatest tricks is getting us to love this world so much we forget we’re pilgrims. We start decorating our tents like they’re mansions. We plant roots where we’re supposed to be traveling light.
That’s why so many believers struggle to live in victory. Their citizenship changed, but they’re still living like permanent residents instead of foreigners just passing through.
So let me ask you:
Where do you live?
Not your street address. Not your zip code.
Where does your heart call home?
Because if Jesus has moved into your life, everything changes. Your address is temporary. Your home is eternal.
And one day—one glorious day—you’ll go where He is.
And you’ll finally be home.
Keep Looking Up!
Heaven is closer than you think.
May God bless your day.
