The Billy Graham Rule: How One Honest Hour Protected a Lifetime
In November of 1948, in a forgettable hotel in Modesto, California, four young men in their twenties did something most of us never get around to doing. They sat down and named, out loud, every sin that could destroy them. Then they decided, in advance, to run from each one.
Billy Graham was frightened. He had watched gifted preachers fall, over money, over women, over their own exaggerations. He did not want to be next. So he sent his friends to their rooms with a simple assignment. Write down what ruins a man of God. When they returned, the lists matched almost word for word.
Why Billy Graham Built a Fence Before He Needed It
Out of that hour came what people now call the Modesto Manifesto. Handle money with total honesty. Never be alone with a woman other than your wife. Tell the truth about your results. Honor the local church. No contract. No lawyers. Just a promise made to God. And it held for sixty years. Proverbs 4:26 says, Ponder the path of your feet, and let all your ways be established. Graham pondered the path before he ever set foot on it.
The Decision You Make Before the Temptation Comes
Most of us try to make holy choices in unholy moments, when we are tired, lonely, or cornered. That is the worst time to decide. Graham settled the question while his heart was calm, so the storm never got a vote. The strongest fence is the one you build while the field is still safe.
What Your Modesto Manifesto Might Look Like
You may never preach to a stadium, but you have a life worth guarding. What are the two or three things that could quietly wreck what God has given you? Name them. Write them down. Decide today how you will run. James 4:7 promises that when we resist the devil, he will flee. Resistance starts long before the moment of testing.
Billy Graham’s greatest sermon may not have been preached from a platform at all. It was written on a sheet of hotel stationery by a young man humble enough to fear his own weakness.
