When Heaven Visited Wales: The 1904 Awakening
The coal dust never quite washed off his hands. By day, Evan Roberts swung a pick in the Welsh mines. By night, for years, he knelt by his bed and prayed one prayer: “Lord, bend me.” In 1904, heaven answered, and a nation bent with him.
A Youn,g Miner Named Evan
He was twenty-six, untrained, unknown. No seminary, no platform, no plan, just a hunger that wouldn’t quit. Hosea had written the prescription centuries before: “Break up your fallow ground, for it is time to seek the LORD, till He comes and rains righteousness on you” (Hosea 10:12). Evan broke up his ground. And the rain came.
Four Pillars of His Prayer
Roberts preached almost nothing. He made four simple appeals. Confess every known sin. Put away every doubtful thing. Obey the Spirit instantly. Confess Christ openly. That was it. No theatrics, no manipulation. Just a young man asking a hard church to get honest with a holy God.
100,000 Saved in a Year
Within twelve months, an estimated one hundred thousand souls came to Christ. Taverns emptied. Courtrooms sat idle. The miners’ ponies, the story goes, couldn’t understand the commands anymore — their drivers had stopped cursing. A whole country had been bent.
It still works, friend. Revival never needed a famous name or a big budget. It only needed fallow ground broken open and one heart willing to pray, “Lord, bend me.”
And that, friend, is how God lifts up your day.
Keep Looking Up!
