God’s Great Love: What John 3:16 Really Means for You
John 3:16
Do you really know God’s great love? Not just as a verse on a bumper sticker or a sign in the end zone, but as something you’ve felt when life knocked you flat on your back?
Let me tell you a story that might help you see it more clearly.
At the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, Derek Redmond of Great Britain was considered a favorite contender for a medal in the 400 meters. It was the evening of August 3, 1992, as Redmond knelt poised alongside seven other runners, waiting for the race to start.
As the gun went off, his body was transformed into a human locomotive, feverishly charging against the competition. As Redmond prepared to round the curve after the halfway mark, however, he suddenly heard a pop. It was his right hamstring.
Redmond soon found himself trapped by searing pain. The other runners finished the race as he desperately continued his painful trek toward the finish line. He waved off the stretchers, determined to finish what he started.
From the stands, his father had been watching. Jim Redmond pushed his way past security guards to meet his son on the track. He reached his weeping son and said, “Look, you don’t have to do this.” Derek replied, “Yes, I do.” His father then said, “Well, if you’re going to finish this race, we’ll finish it together.”
With his arm locked around his son, Jim Redmond helped Derek to the finish line to the sounds of a cheering stadium. This moment in Olympic history was so powerful that Bud Greenspan included it in his book, 100 Greatest Moments in Olympic History.
Friend, that’s a picture of God’s unconditional love.
We must remember that God is like that father in the race we are running. Sometimes we get injured along the way. Sometimes we pull up lame and can’t take another step on our own. But God is always there — ready to push past every obstacle, put His arm around us, and help us to the finish line.
In John 3:16, the word “love” is the Greek word agape. It speaks of the greatest love of all — the kind of love that can only come from God Himself. Agape love has no strings attached. It doesn’t come with conditions or fine print. It’s not an “I’ll love you if…” kind of love. It’s an “I love you, period” kind of love.
That’s the love God has for you. No matter what you’ve done. No matter who you are. No matter how many times you’ve fallen on the track. He will always love you — and He will always come for you.
So the next time you feel like you’re limping through life, remember Derek Redmond, and remember the Father who left His seat to come get you.
Keep Looking Up!
Heaven is closer than you think.
May God bless your day.
